In most cases, it’s best to see a physiotherapist first. Physiotherapists are trained to assess your condition, identify the likely cause of your pain, and determine whether imaging such as an X-ray is necessary.
Many conditions like back pain, neck pain, and muscle injuries do not require imaging and can be effectively treated with physiotherapy. Starting with physiotherapy can often help you begin the right treatment sooner and avoid unnecessary imaging.
If your pain is severe, worsening, or you’re concerned about a more serious issue, it may be appropriate to see a GP first for further assessment.
If you’re unable to see a GP urgently, a physiotherapist can still assess your condition and, if needed, refer you for an X-ray or guide you on the next steps.
